Kolkata doctor rape case LIVE Updates: The Indian Medical Association (IMA) on Friday called for a nationwide withdrawal of doctors’ services for twenty-four hours to oppose the death of a trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar government hospital and violence at the protest site. 

“All essential services will be maintained. Casualties will be manned. Routine OPDs will not function and elective surgeries will not be conducted. The withdrawal is across all the sectors wherever modern medicine doctors are providing service. IMA requires the sympathy of the nation with the just cause of its doctors,” read an IMA press release.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said it’s a “big crime” and the accused should hanged to death. She blamed “Bam [Left] and Ram [BJP]” for RG Kar vandalism on Wednesday night. Her statement came after vandalism and rampage incidents were reported outside RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. Meanwhile, doctors and nurses continue to protest in Kolkata over the incident. Protests were also help outside AIIMS Delhi.

A woman was allegedly raped and murdered in the seminal hall of the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on August 9. The Kolkata rape case has brought medical services to a standstill as students and doctors continue to demand justice for the resident PG doctor. Videos show a mob of dozens pushing their way in the emergency ward of the RG Kar Hospital and vandalising chairs. Some were even seen vandalising the protest site. The CBI has taken over the investigation of the Kolkata rape and murder case.

Kolkata doctor rape case LIVE: Trinamool Congress leader Sukhendu Sekhar Roy wrote to Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday to seek the formation of a stringent central law to prevent atrocities against women. The Rajya Sabha MP had recently made waves after deciding to stage a dharna in solidarity with the women-led midnight protest on August 14.

“Any complaint for incidents of sexual harassment, rape, rape with murder shall be statutorily recorded immediately after the incident and must be immediately reported to the nearest police station failing which the police officer concerned/other authorities must be suspended immediately,” the senior TMC MP and lawyer said in the letter.

He also called for the establishment of at least three fast-track courts in every district, with cases concluding within six months and no more than two adjournments for genuine reasons.

A group of people entered the hospital and vandalised the emergency department, nursing unit and medicine store in the early hours of Thursday. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee also said that DYFI (the Left youth organisation) flags were seen during the attack.

“The nexus between the Left and BJP should be exposed. The CPI(M) and the BJP are behind the vandalism of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. They vandalized the hospital to destroy evidence of the ghastly crime,” she said.

According to an Anandabazar Patrika report, officials believe that the vandals had joined smaller sub-groups and blended amid protesters. The publication quoted sources to indicate that some DYFI flags had been seen outside the hospital at the time of the incident. There has been no evidence of left flags inside the premises.

The public outrage over the rape and murder of a woman trainee doctor in Kolkata is understandable but the CBI taking over the case shouldn’t lead to it “being quietly buried”, Trinamool Congress leader Derek O’Brien said on Friday.

“It is hard to conceive of a more bestial, heinous crime than the murder and rape of a young woman that took place in Kolkata. The public outrage is entirely understandable. Thoughts and prayers with her family,” the Rajya Sabha MP said in a post on X.

Patients who have been coming to the Chandigarh PGIMER stated that they have been facing a lot of trouble because of the ongoing protest for five days and urged the government to fulfil the demands of the doctors.

“We are facing a lot of problems due to the absence of OPD. We have come from a long distance,” said Nitin, a patient.

“If OPD is closed, then, we should have informed first. Now we have come. Our checkup was done on the old card but the card for meeting the new doctor is not being made, so we will have to come again,” said another patient Pushpa.
